Material Boy

Fun, humourous and brave - Material Boy is breaking barriers in men’s fashion. Mic Eaton, an ex-pro surfer, launched the label in 2003 in Perth but now divides his time between Melbourne and Indonesia. Material Boy pushes menswear out of its comfort zone and those inside and outside the fashion industry continue to admire the label’s originality.

Material Boy has seen a meteoric rise in the Australian and international fashion scene. Their breakout season in AW06 - ‘Honey I shrunk the Boy’ was where the now famous exaggerated silhouettes and bold colours first grabbed the attention of the Australian fashion scene. The collection featured unexpected detailing, colours and prints on dropped crouched drain pipes, “MC Hammer” style jeans (now imitated but other streetwear designers) and slouchy oversized hoodies. The S06/07 collection continued the theme with the Mario Bros inspired ‘Level 19, Super Material Boy, happy fun land’ glittered pointy boots, more tight jeans with super-low crotches and puffy shorts - all in hyper-real, video game primary colours.

Material Boy is now a favourite among Eaton's mates, who include band members of Jet, Gerling, the Casanovas, Children Collide and Faker. The label is not only well known at home, it is also stocked in a number of exclusive international boutiques, including London boutique Kokon to Zai, Surface to Air in Paris, Midwest Stores in Tokyo and American Rag Cie in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
